On June 22, 2004 Bramwell, Sharon, Benjamin and Emma Ryan started traveling through 18 of the 20 countries around and on the Mediterranean Sea. For six months, beginning in Morocco, they’ll be backpacking, taking local transportation and living with modern day inheritors of ancestral ways of life we also draw upon. It’s
the centre of the earth, the navel of the world. For millennia the people
around the Mediterranean have influenced all aspects of humanity: from
warfare to wines, feasting to philosophy, Jehovah to Jesus to Allah. All
of us, especially those of us in the west, owe a debt to the Mediterranean.
And once again, movements, ideas and actions from the shores of the million-square-mile
sea dominate the headlines and force armies and governments to react.
